There has been no end of headlines and social media posts over the past few days reminding us that Germany has finally shut down its last nuclear reactor, despite the fact that this has immediately resulted in higher greenhouse gas emissions and an increase in coal demand. The “celebrations” in Berlin by Greenpeace and other anti-nuclear activists were surreal in the cognitive dissonance on display, particularly given that there is majority support in Germany for nuclear power.
