The focus for the MCFD-2019 Conference is on the approaches used to demonstrate the continued Fitness-for-Service (FFS) of components in Nuclear Power Plants. Ever increasing demands for FFS demonstrations often require innovative and multidisciplinary solutions that involve elements of engineering from: materials, chemistry, stress analysis, thermal-hydraulic analysis, probabilistic assessment methods, examination and inspection approaches, and operational strategies. This is the case for most major nuclear plant systems and components, regardless of reactor type.
Objectives of this conference are:
The conference will be of interest to representatives from various sectors of the Nuclear Industry including: material and equipment vendors, technical and engineering service providers, utility technical staff, regulators, designers, researchers, students, and academia.

Course: CANDU & Powerplant Chemistry—Brief Overview*
We’re pleased to announce that we will offer a CANDU & Powerplant Chemistry course on the evening of 15 May to start the conference.
Many systems in CANDU nuclear plants are common to other thermal power station designs—steam turbines and related steam and water systems, electrical systems and supplies—but the CANDU design also incorporates unique features: pressure tubes, feeder pipes, moderator, endshield, and annulus gas systems. Twenty-three (23) of these systems have their chemistries monitored as part of either corrosion control and/or reactor control.
Taking a distinctly historical perspective, and sprinkled with interesting anecdotes, the course will concentrate on those systems that have their chemistries controlled to minimise corrosion and extend component life; specifically, those systems that have caused significant expenditure, primarily as a result of corrosion. Along with the actual water chemistry in these systems, you’ll come to understand how chemistry is affected by and, conversely, affects the materials of construction.
A hint at the flavour of the course material:
The boilers, or steam generators, are the dustbin/garbage can of the pressurised water reactor. Not surprisingly, then, these components have resulted in the greatest expenditures to fix and prevent further degradation.
In addition to being the garbage can of the reactor, steam is generated to spin the turbine and generate electricity. This simple act of boiling water causes concentration of impurities which can result in a corrosive environment for tubing. Should the boilers have accumulated deposits there will be amplification of the corrosive environment. What might be surprising is that the degradation is not limited to occurring whilst the boilers are hot!
The course should be of considerable interest to all, from novice engineer to chemistry expert. Come ready to be engaged, informed, and entertained!
* This course is complimentary with a full conference registration. If you would like to purchase a ticket to attend ONLY the chemistry course, it is available upon request for $200. Please email chantel@redstoneagency.ca for more information.
Sponsorship Opportunities
Sponsorship of MCFD-2019 is an opportunity to demonstrate your company’s commitment to the nuclear industry and to the goals and objectives of this conference – the engineering, science and technology behind major components of nuclear power plants, and their contribution to operating excellence and long-term life extension.
Sponsorship provides the benefit of increased corporate visibility and recognition among conference participants, and profiles your company as a leader within the industry. There are a wide range of sponsorship items and levels of support available. Click here for more details.
MCFD-2019 Trade Show
Businesses that provide engineering, refurbishment, retrofit and maintenance services to the nuclear industry are encouraged to purchase an exhibit booth space to take advantage of the opportunity to showcase their company’s services to participants. There will be many business development opportunities throughout the conference for networking.
The MCFD-2019 Trade Show involves booth spaces in the Markham Ballroom Foyer.
