Time:           6:00 pm         Mix & Mingle\, Cash Bar                                           6:30 pm        Hot Buffet Dinner (Roast Beef au jus\, Grilled Salmon\, Sides\,                                            Dessert\, Coffee/Tea)                     7:30 pm        Talk starts  \nCost:            $15 for CNS members and their guest      $25 for non-members * \nOn Thursday 13th December\, the Ottawa Branch of the Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS) is pleased to host a dinner and presentation event.  Mr. Ian Grant (biography attached) will provide a presentation on his nine years’ experience working in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with an outline of the launch of the peaceful nuclear energy programme in the UAE\, the establishment of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) as the independent regulatory body for safety\, security and safeguards\, along with development of the necessary legal and regulatory framework\, and FANR’s oversight of the construction and commissioning of the 4 x 1400 MWe nuclear power plant located at Barakah on the Arabian Gulf coast. Join us at this fine venue\, greet new colleagues and former colleagues you have not seen for some time\, enjoy a delicious hot meal and what will undoubtedly be an interesting presentation and discussion. He was Deputy Director General for Operations at the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation from 2016 to 2018 and the Director of Nuclear Safety from 2009 to 2015\, where he oversaw the construction and commissioning of the new 4-unit nuclear power plant at Barakah in the UAE. \nBefore joining FANR\, Ian held various senior roles with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission with responsibility for safety assessment and licensing of operating nuclear power plants in Canada. He joined Atomic Energy of Canada Limited in 1980 after beginning his career with Babcock and Wilcox in the United Kingdom in 1975. \nIan has participated in several International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) peer review missions\, was an invited contributor to the IAEA report on the Fukushima accident\, participated in national delegations to four review meetings of the Convention on Nuclear Safety\, and served on the IAEA Nuclear Safety Standards Committee and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency committees for nuclear safety and regulation. \nHe holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Glasgow and a Master’s degree in Welding Technology from Cranfield University in the United Kingdom. He is a licensed professional engineer in Ontario\, Canada\, and a Fellow of the UK Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
