SUMMARY:Next Week: Register Now! Intelligence Update with Jeremy Whitlock
DESCRIPTION:Next Week!Intelligence Update with Jeremy WhitlockAbout Jeremy: Since 2017 at the IAEA in Vienna\, currently as Senior Technical Advisor\, IAEA Dept. of Safeguards\, with responsibility for the IAEA’s ‘safeguards by design’ programme – i.e.\, readiness for SMRs and other emerging nuclear technologies.22 years at AECL/CNL – reactor physicist 1994-2006\, manager of non-proliferation and safeguards programme 2006-2016.PhD and MEng from McMaster (Engineering Physics – reactor physics)\, BSc from Waterloo (physics)In our intelligence update with Olivier Gregoire of Moltex we learned all about how their technology would address the proliferation issue. There were many questions about proliferation control and the international Safeguard’s program that we did not have the time nor the expertise to answer.  As it happens\, a good friend  and active member of the Canadian Nuclear Society\, Jeremy Whitlock\, is presently at the IAEA in Vienna\, where he is a Senior Technical Advisor in the Department of Safeguards\, so I asked him if he would tell us all about it and he agreed. So if you want to learn all about the Safeguard’s program\, its impact on Canada and how Small Modular Reactors will fit in then please join us in conversation on: Tuesday February 13th\, from 11:00am-12:00pm.Please note the earlier start is to accommodate Jeremy whose day begins much earlier than ours.Register Now!

SUMMARY:The Deep Geologic Repository – Why it is important and what you can do to help. A lunch and learn with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization
DESCRIPTION:In 2024 the NWMO will select a site for a Deep Geologic Repository\, an enormous step forward for Canada’s plan to dispose of Used Nuclear Fuel. It’s an important project for the industry\, and Laurie Swami\, President of the NWMO has asked for our help. \n\n\n\nBut what is the project\, how is it progressing\, what are the challenges\, and how can we all help? Join us on May 23 rd 2023\, from 12:00pm – 1:00pm for a virtual lunch and learn provided by the NWMO\, in which they will answer those questions and any other questions you may have. Hosted by Neil Alexander and presented by Mark Gobien of the NWMO\, this is your opportunity to get a full update on the project. \n\n\n\nThis event is free to CNS members and to the public. Please join us for the event and invite any colleagues\, friends or members of your community that you think would benefit from learning about this project. You can join the event using this link. \n\n\n\nThe Canadian Nuclear Society is an independent\, not for profit\, scientific society of individuals with an interest in nuclear power in Canada\, with the objective of promoting the exchange of technical information on all aspects of nuclear science and technology and its applications. \n\n\n\nThe Nuclear Waste Management Organization is responsible for designing and implementing Canada’s plan for the safe\, long-term management of used nuclear fuel. The plan\, known as Adaptive Phased Management\, requires used fuel to be contained and isolated in a deep geological repository. It also calls for a comprehensive process to select a site with informed and willing hosts for the project. Mark Gobien is the Section Manager\, Safety Assessment Models in the Safety and Technical Research department at the Nuclear Waste Management Organization. He holds a BSc in Physics from Queen’s University and in 2018\, attended the World Nuclear University Summer Institute program in South Korea. Mark has 15 years of experience at the NWMO conducting postclosure safety assessments\, developing safety assessment tools and models\, and managing technical work programs. Currently\, he is the project lead developing a next-generation system model for postclosure safety assessments.

SUMMARY:CNS Sheridan Park Branch invites you to participate in the following virtual presentation: eVinci™ Microreactor for Commercial and Space Applications
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Michael Valore\, Sr. Director – Advanced Reactor Commercialization \n\n\n\nEnergy Systems\, Westinghouse Electric Company \n\n\n\nSummary:  The presentation will cover Westinghouse Electric Co. development of the eVinci™ Microreactor which provides grid resiliency for strategic infrastructure\, delivers power for remote applications and supports power for space program needs. At the heart of the reactor technology are sodium heat pipes. The heat pipes passively transfer heat via sodium metal phase change.   The heat pipes replace the complex high pressure primary coolant systems necessary for most other high temperature reactor designs with a safe\, low pressure\, simple system that has minimal moving parts. This design enables a compact\, transportable design that is simple to operate and minimizes on site construction. \n\n\n\nRegistration: Registration is free but required; we welcome CNS members\, students and interested members of the broader community. \n\n\n\nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:CNS Sheridan Park Branch invites you to participate in:  Is it appropriate to pre-distribute potassium-iodide (KI) pills around nuclear power plants?
DESCRIPTION:Speaker:   Dr. Jerry Cuttler\,  D.Sc.\, P. Eng.\, Former Engineering Manager at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited \n\n\n\nSummary:   The presentation demonstrates that a credible accident would not cause any radiation-induced thyroid cancers in the surrounding population. The purpose of pre-distributing these pills is compliance with the precautionary principle policy that was adopted in 1960 by the U.S. NCRP and accepted world wide. The reason given for adopting the false radiation scare was a lack of scientific information about the health effects of radiation. However\, more than 120 years of scientific evidence in medicine and research is available that supports the known safety of the expected exposures to ionizing radiation. Distributing KI pills would only add to widespread public fear. The false scare not only blocks the provision of affordable nuclear energy\, it also blocks potential applications of low doses of radiation in medical therapies for diseases\, such as cancer metastasis\, inflammations\, infections\, autoimmune conditions\, and neurodegenerative Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. \n\n\n\nRegistration: Registration is free but required; we welcome CNS members\, students and interested members of the broader community. \n\n\n\n\nClick Here to Register
