SUMMARY:Joint International Meeting on Supercomputing in Nuclear Applications and Monte Carlo (SNA + MC 2013)
DESCRIPTION:The first edition of SNA+MC 2010 was held in Tokyo in 2010. This joint international conference on “Supercomputing in Nuclear Application (SNA)” and “Monte Carlo (MC )” will be renewed;SNA+MC 2013 will be held in Paris from 27 to 31 October 2013. \nThe long-standing solidarity that exists between the growth of computers dedicated to scientific calculations and that of the Monte Carlo methods\, from the theoretical point of view as well as its general usage\, certainly legitimizes such a convergence. \nThe first ambition of SNA+MC 2013 is to review recent breakthroughs in HPC and in Monte Carlo\, as well as in the usage made of them in the very varied fields of nuclear applications. \nSNA+MC 2013 will take place under the hallmark of transdisciplinary work\, encompassing types of interdependent physical phenomena and different physical scales (from infra-femtometric level to macroscopic level). Theorists\, experimentalists\, developers and end-users will address such issues as the rapid growth of computing power (moving towards Exascale) with awareness of today’s complex realities\, experience and digital experience\, in the various worlds of industry\, applied and/or fundamental research institutions and academia\, whose borders and connections vary from one country to another. \nThe conference aims to highlight renewed strategy and simulation paradigms\, and to identify future conceptual and technological breakthroughs. The objective is to increase the predictive capacity of the calculation tools designed and developed by teams of engineers and researchers all over the globe. The idea is to improve the performances accordingly in terms of calculation time\, usability and maintainability.  All these factors are indeed crucial for the central question of the role of a global nuclear application economy\, including safety\, optimizations and costs. \nStudies and research may be presented orally and/or with posters. A dedicated area for posters will be reserved for the Monte Carlo codes with the option of demonstrations.  Exhibition stands will be proposed to institutional players in the areas of research\, academic training and scientific information. \nSNA+MC 2013 wishes to offer an exchange of views forum\, mutually beneficial to members of both the research community and the industrial community\, not restricted to nuclear applications. \nIt is anticipated that the best manuscripts will be published in an international revue\, after the usual selection process. \nAs previously\, graduate students are strongly invited to attend this conference and to present their research; the best submissions will be rewarded. \nFinally\, SNA+MC 2013\, attuned to the social and cultural contexts of science and technology\, will be held at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie de la Villette in Paris. \nThe proximity of the Ourcq canal and the green open spaces of the Parc de la Villette\, together with the gastronomic and artistic surroundings\, will enable participants to combine utility with pleasure for five full days of work and exchanges. This will also contribute to the success warmly anticipated for the SNA+MC 2013 conference.  \n  \nGeneral Chairs

SUMMARY:INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR FUEL CYCLE CONFERENCE - GLOBAL 2013
DESCRIPTION:“Nuclear Energy at a Crossroads” \nGlobal 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of the Global International Nuclear Fuel Cycle Conference series since its inception in Seattle\, Washington in 1993. It is the 11th conference in the series\, and the 5th held in the United States. The previous conference\, Global 2011\, held in Makuhari Messe\, Japan\, successfully continued the series despite the devastating events earlier that year in Japan and at the Fukushima Diiachi Nuclear Power Station. \nIn the 20 years since the inception of the Global conference series\, the route of nuclear energy has traveled in various directions: facing limited growth\, the promise of a renaissance\, a nuclear disaster\, and now\, stands at a crossroads. Following the Fukushima disaster\, some countries have decided to phase out nuclear energy; others plan to reduce the amount of nuclear in their energy mix\, while other nations continue to move ahead with aggressive plans for nuclear expansion. Construction of new generation III light water reactors are underway in a number of countries\, with growing interest in nuclear energy by a number of nations without a nuclear infrastructure. International research programs continue to perform research on advanced fuels\, reactors and fuel cycles\, and making improvements in performance for existing fuel cycle facilities. \nThere is still a strong international interest in advanced fuel cycles utilizing portioning and transmutation. Progress continues in a few countries toward permanent geologic disposal of used nuclear fuel\, while many countries are at a standstill or re-evaluating their approach to used fuel management. \nGlobal 2013 will promote discussions on the current global situation in nuclear energy\, development of current and advanced nuclear systems and fuel cycles\, nonproliferation issues and challenges\, and societal issues (public acceptance\, human capital development\, etc) regarding nuclear energy. \nGlobal 2013 will be held at the Little America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City\, Utah. Salt Lake City is Utah’s capital and centered in the “Crossroads of the West” where cities\, mountains\, rivers and cultures converge. The city’s international airport and light rail system makes getting to and around town easy. Salt Lake City is a vibrant metropolitan area with a small-town feel: offering a friendly\, clean and safe destination for our Global 2013 participants.  \nFor the Global 2013 brochure click here

SUMMARY:SMiRT-22 (Structural Materials in Reactor Technology)
DESCRIPTION:Over 30 years have passed since the 1977 SMiRT4 conference was held in San Francisco. During this time\, nuclear energy has continued to be an important part of the world’s energy supply despite facing many challenges. With the estimated world population forecasted to reach 9 billion by 2050\, the need for energy is expected to be more than the total energy produced to date. This projected growth in energy demand\, coupled with the need for carbon free\, secure and diverse energy supplies\, confirms the potential for significant growth of nuclear energy. The industry has responded bydeveloping various standard designs\, modular reactors\, and novel ideas for the nuclear fuel cycle.

SUMMARY:NUTHOS-09
DESCRIPTION:Thermal-hydraulics\, operations\, and safety are recognized as the key cross-cutting subjects for the development of advanced nuclear systems and for the operations and safety assessment of operating plants. NUTHOS has provided the international nuclear communities with an information exchange forum of engineering experience\, new research results and future demands on these three subjects. \n  \nThe first NUTHOS was held in Taipei in 1984 followed by Tokyo (1986)\, Seoul (1988)\, Taipei (1994)\, Beijing (1997)\, Nara (2004)\, Seoul (2008) and Shanghai (2010). The success of the previous conferences clearly indicates the high interests of the international nuclear community in NUTHOS and leads to the establishment of NUTHOS as one of the major international conferences in these fields. The ninth of the series\, NUTHOS-9\, will continue the NUTHOS tradition to provide the international nuclear industries\, research institutions and academic organizations an open platform for exchanging their up-to-the-minute research results and engineering experiences.   \n  \nIn light of the recent tragic events at Fukushima\, NUTHOS-9 includes an addition theme to address all aspects of the technical issues related to this event. Special plenary and technical sessions are organized to report on the latest analysis results\, implemented corrective actions\, policy changes\, impacts to operating plants and new orders\, and future perspectives. \nIt is our greatest pleasure to invite you to attend the NUTHOS-9 conference\, to share the latest scientific and technical results.

In 2011\, the CNA launched four successful social media channels under the TalkNUclear brand. TalkNUclear is our opportunity to engage Canadians in a dialogue about what they want to talk about and create an environment in which Canadians can have a healthy\, balanced conversation about nuclear technology. \nThe presentation The Canadian Nuclear Industry “Talking Nuclear” will explain what social media is and why it matters\, and provide resources and tips for how you can get involved and add your voice to the nuclear conversion that is happening online – with or without you.   \n\n\n\n\n09:00-09:30 \n\n\nQuestions/Discussion \n\n\n\n\n09:30-10:00 \n\n\nPresentation 2  Denise Chartrand\, Royal Roads Univsersity \nConcepts for how to develop an understanding in multi-party discussions \nThere is much discussion about working together to develop sustainable solutions. In reality working together is often easier said than done. This talk will touch on some key concepts for how to develop an understanding in multi-party discussions including\,  \n\nUnderstanding who needs to be at the table\nDeveloping ground rules to empower success\nExploring productive communication practices in groups\nManaging conflict effectively\n\n\n\n\n\n10:00-10:30 \n\n\nQuestions/Discussion \n\n\n\n\n10:30-10:45 \n\n\nCoffee Break 1 \n\n\n\n\n10:45-12:00 \n\n\nGroup Workshop 1  Hosted by Dave Shoesmith \nTopics for Discussion: \n\nHow can nuclear outreach gain credibility when most people representing the technology are employed by the industry?  (i.e. how to overcome the perception of employment bias?)\n“Do fewer things\, but do them well”:  Given the relatively small size of the nuclear industry\, how could the combined resources of the industry be pooled to most effectively communicate nuclear science and technology to the public?\nWhat are the “top five” things we do wrong as a technical community in reaching out to the public?\nHow can the public’s (or students’) “critical thinking” capabilities be improved when it comes to assessing controversial subjects?\n\n\n\n\n\n12:00-13:00 \n\n\nLunch \n\n\n\n\n13:00–14:00 \n\n\n\nGroup Workshop 2  Hosted by Dave Shoesmith\n\nTopics for Discussion: \n\n“Matching the message to the audience”:  summarize how the same overall message (e.g. what happened at Fukushima\, incl. health effects) would be best communicated to each of the following groups: (1) Grade 7 students; (2) High-school science students; (3) general public; (4) the media\n“Will the real expert please step forward”:  How can the general public distinguish between (seemingly) equally qualified experts\, whose opinions differ greatly on controversial topics like nuclear power?\nHow do we as members of a civilized society embrace greater integrity in communication for society’s benefit at the expense of individual benefits. Can this altruism be taught? Can we ever change this human trait? eg we humans will oppose an initiative on the grounds of a financial impact (a base human cause)but for public consumption we say we oppose on the basis of health and safety impacts – a much higher human cause.\n\n\n\n\n\n14:00-14:30 \n\n\nQuestions/Discussion \n\n\n\n\n14:30-15:00 \n\n\nTravel to McMaster \n\n\n\n\n15:00- 17:00 \n\n\nTour of McMaster Reactor \n\n\n\n\n17:00 \n\n\nEnd of Day 2 \n\n\n\n\n  \nContacts: \nGeneral inquiries may be addressed to the CNS main office at  cns_office@cns-snc.ca\, or call (416)977-7620. \nThe Technical Program Chair\, Brad Moore can be reached at moorebg@hotmail.ca. For sponsorship information please contact Cherie Ferrari at Cherie.Ferrari@kinectrics.com or John Krasznai at john.krasznai@kinectrics.com.
